Radish is originated from Asia, and is one of the oldest crop cultivation in the world. The most commonly seen variety is large radish. In Meinong, there is a special cultivation of small radish; though small in size, it is just as delicious. The radish looks like long pieces of white jades when harvested, which is very pleasing to the eye, and hence got its name “white jade radish”.

Compared to normal radish, white jade radish is smaller in size. This cute little radish which has an average length of 15 to 25 cm and 5 cm diameter is very crunchy. To retain its water content and sweetness, the skin does not need to be peeled off for cooking; mere cleaning would be sufficient. Hakka women often use white jade radish for pickling. Due to its high nutritional value, it has also earned the name “little ginseng”. White jade radish cultivated from Meinong and Shanlin are the most renowned.
